We got off to an early start this morning and reached Ithica, NY at 1:15 PM.
This is a nice stop with a great restaurant right at the Dock. Aqua Vino Restaurant:
Our next stop is Sylvan Beach and then on to Brewerton.
Here is a look at where we were for the last two days:
Jeff and Brenda Heckter were still at the St Johnsville Marina when we left, but they expected to start being towed to Sylvan Beach today.
The tow boat operator worked on repairing the tow boat late yesterday and slept in his truck to get an early start. I hope the tow boat was repaired and that they got off in time.
The canal is very serene in the early morning. However I have had to keep a close watch for logs in the water. The heavy rains several weeks ago put a lot of wood and logs in the canal.
We went through 4 Locks today including Lock 17 in Little Falls, NY. It is the largest single step lock on the Erie Canal. The boat is raised 40 feet in the lock.
You enter the lock by going under a Guard Gate on the East side. Since they raise it straight up, you get wet as you go under it and proceed into the lock. It is one of only two Locke in N America where the entrance gate is lifted above the boater. The other in on the Ottawa River in Ontario, Canada.
This is the hugh Guard Gate that you go under as you enter the lock. There is a hugh section of cement that counterbalances the Gate. You can see it close to the top.
The Lockmasters job description includes all duties associated with the lock including mowing the grass, painting, repairs, etc. They do a great job and the locks grounds and building look clean and neat:
Here is where Lulu stays as we handle the lines in the lock.
